Why byler? Is my question what is it about them that’s so popular
ooo this is a fun one. im assuming you may be one of my newer followers who didnt follow me when i was in the byler trenches. welcome. let me explain.
i think probably the biggest reason people gravitate towards byler is that its extremely fun for people who love film analysis because most of us genuinely believe it will happen in s5. for me specifically, this is the entire reason im here. i first started liking byler when s2 came out but it was casual. i just thought they'd be cute together. once s3 came out and i saw someone point out that mike was framed perfectly in a closet, that was my turning point. thats when i got insane about them because i actually believed its where they were headed.
its always fun to ship your favorite characters and engage in fanfics and fanart, but when theres a genuine belief that this is the direction the story is actually going in, its just a completely different experience. its a whole other world. its no longer about the characters themselves anymore. its about the cinematography, the props, the color palettes, the music choices, the blocking, the lighting. all of these things and more have provided evidence for why we believe byler will be endgame. its the perfect ship for people who are really passionate about filmmaking as a whole.
many of us, including myself, got our degrees in film or have a background in filmmaking. ive made my own films and i plan to make more. one of them was screened at a festival. ive written academic papers on shows and movies. i've taken college film classes where my professors talked about stranger things. im a professional photographer which coincides a lot with film. i have this blog to talk about my favorite fictional media online. every time i watch something new i read long analyses on the media. if they dont exist, i write them myself and post them here. i love talking about and learning about and watching cinema on a much deeper level than someone who just throws on a show when theyre bored. so watching two complex characters not only have romantic tension in their actions and dialogue alone, but also have enough depth to analyze the practical filmmaking choices that prove they are going to end up together…. well its like fucking cocaine to me.
another reason is that mike wheeler, in my opinion, has the potential to have some of the most well written internalized homophobia ever. and i think he differs greatly from a lot of other characters with internalized homophobia because the writers have had the patience to not fully confirm his sexuality until the final season. many other queer characters who struggle with their sexuality come to terms with it over the course of one season or less. or they write it with dramatic irony so the audience is always well aware they are queer from the getgo, even if the character doesnt know yet. while theres nothing inherently wrong with any of these choices, i think having a more outside perspective on internalized homophobia and having that perspective be told slowly will make for a much more authentic and powerful queer coming of age story. i think all of mikes flaws and animosity towards both will and el will pay off so much once we know what hes been going through. i believe this character actually has the potential to reach people who arent accepting of the queer community right now.
byler also just resonates with the queer community so much. a lot of queer ships, especially mlm ships, are dominated by straight women, sometimes to the point where the ship doesn't even feel like its a part of queer culture anymore. its just nice to have a gay ship that feels like its for gay people. and as much as i love a really well written tragedy, its also nice that we can see a happy ending so clearly.
in short, its just fun. the whole "will they/wont they" element is fun as hell. ive never had that with a ship before. i tend to lean towards slow burns that i know will be canon (snowbaz <3) or tragedies that are so gut wrenching i dont even WISH they got together (jackieshauna <333) byler however just speaks to my film loving soul on such a deep level. its perfect for me. its so fun to analyze and read other people's analyses. i cant wait to see how it unfolds in s5.
#i honestly love getting asks from people who arent byler shippers#like yessss let me enlighten you#sorry this took me four days to answer#i think im gonna go back into byler hibernation now i have to prepare for severance tomorrow lol#byler#eden answers

https://www.tumblr.com/castlebyersafterdark/788464423221280768/here-is-another-example-of-how-even-the-younger?source=share
I appreciate this post from an elder queer. to me, the main issue when young people cry queerbaiting is not about queerbaiting itself - it's a symptom of the post #metoo world where people just do not understand non-verbal communication anymore. maybe they dont even do critical analysis or literature studies in schools anymore, who knows! but people need/want byler to be more obvious, they want them to verbalise their love for each other, as if this is somehow objectively better than showing it through actions or saying it through euphemism. For some reason, verbal statements are prized above anything in youth culture now, even when the opposite has always been true in good cinema. Everyone knows that exposition fucking sucks and is considered bad and lazy writing. It's literally what a screenwriter does when they can't figure out a way to communicate information to the audience without just straight up having a character unnaturally lecturing it. And yet people would rather be bashed over the head with the fact that will's gay than let the beauty of subtlety do its work.
I mean, what exactly would milevens want mike to have done to show he's into guys? beyond what the show has shown us with his behaviour towards will and subtle crush on eddie, the little set design details, etc? do they think he needs to have eyes bugging out and jaw dropping like a looney tunes character every time will walks in? do they think mike needs to openly state 'so, tom cruise is fucking hot isnt he!' at the wheeler family breakfast? dialogue like that, even in a modern movie where its not the 80s, would be fucking shit writing; on the nose, boring, where the character says exactly what he feels. characters NEVER say only what they feel. there is always a hidden truth, and this is what makes it art and not just a home video you shot on your mommy's shitty camera.
so maybe OP was right about people just wanting to rile themselves up due to boredom during this wait. they believe the bullies who try to trick them into thinking they cannot read facial expressions, mood cues, or non verbal communication. Somehow, anything that is non-verbal communication has been equated with subjectivity, as if none of us should ever dare to trust our own abilities to understand something that someone hasn't straight up said in words.
here's a little fun game to prove it: close your laptop or shut off your phone. go talk to the friends/family who dont believe in byler endgame. tell them that mike is gay and will fall in love with will in s5. now tell me that you can't read their opinion on this idea without them outright verbally stating to you that 'mike isn't gay, you fool!' tell me you can't read the vibe of the room, the disdain/excitement on their face, their body language at the topic and need them to tell you IN WORDS ONLY how they feel about byler.
how many byler fans who cry queerbaiting at the subtlety of byler would say yes, i need verbal comms only? hardly any, i'd wager. they'll easily read non-verbal cues that are negative, but they are reluctant to believe the things that confirm what they want to happen. I think byler fans are a swathe of people who have been very hurt in their lives, and maybe queerbaiting is one of the causes, but maybe sometimes it's something else.
i think the issue here is that people adore byler, but they don't always adore the way that the duffers are going about portraying it. they've fallen in love with what byler COULD BE and aren't willing to wait and see what it actually IS. it's like limerence, but for a TV character instead of a real person. such obsession and anxiety is unfortunately one of the downsides of fandom, where you can plug yourself in 24 hours a day to the Doubt Network of People With Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms. So I guess for elder queers, queerbaiting was the real villain. For younger people, it's, essentially, the nature of the internet. But what's new!

thinking about them again (icemav 86)
hey babe wake up. top gun. watched a video about queer villany and oohuhhhhhhhhgllglggggg.ggg.
ice is, in the very since of the word, the perfect antagonist- hes rude, stuck up but in an obvious way, hes directly against everything maverick does while maverick is the hero (he has the same problems as ice though.) ice fits into the norm but at the same time we are only shown mavs perspective which is inherently different than almost all the aviators
you could argue "wow ice is evil" and like sure but its refreshing to see someone whos not entirely bad but rather misguided- we know icemans character is like this because of his father (ty val kilmer for this btw) , and hes trying hard to fit into a world that will never accept him. and that. honestly doesn't make him awful. even in arguably his worst times he still comes back, hes not an irredeemable character, nor is maverick.
they are such opposites that we never know whats the real "true" standard - mavericks not standard on being an outsider but iceman isnt either on being a hater with maverick
also funnily enough, iceman is one of the only charachters to actually have a big problem with maverick! slider, wolf, wood, sunny, etc etc dont shit talk him. but ice is constantly pushing back against those standards because maverick represents the wrongdoing to him.
DEAR G-D ICEMAN PLEASE STOP WITH YOUR INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA AND KISS HIM ALREADY!!!!!
however as he grows up he recognises those actions- at the end of the movie he doesnt see maverick as bad. he sees him as good, and promises that hell be there. MWAH eating this redemption arc UP.
and while maybe ice still has skills that have to be worked on its not entirely evil- and connecting back to the queer thing, to show a charachter who looks evil but also is capable of growing and changing and not being evil just for being gay
maverick is more accepting of his identity but yet they still falter but they can still pick each other back up
i hate these gay bitches so much its actually sickening someone please sedate me .

ive been starting to block people that do this but it really shakes me when people use "reject modernity embrace tradition" as a meme. unlike say pepe the frog where you could argue maybe people dont know of its fascist use and it wasnt created with that in mind, "reject modernity embrace tradition" is literally a fascist talking point and rallying cry about how modernity is bad and we need to go back to tradition. saw it being used for like trying to dunk on live action disney movies and like guys please know what propaganda is and dont play into that mindset
oh I absolutely block people for that. If they seem to be genuinely unaware I will warn them, but most people it's a 100% instant block.
You can literally find this slogan on Nazi propaganda because that's what it is! "Modernity" is code for: Black and brown people and women and disabled people and Queer people and anyone who's not a devour Christian or Catholic not being shoved into the sidelines of society and history. Modernity is the fact that women and people perceived as women can have our own bank accounts now instead of literally being forced to rely on our husband for money. Modernity is slavery being "abolished" in the US (Except for as punishment for a crime!!!! Because fuck this whole entire country and the constitution and its worshippers).

Normally i don't do this because like. While I'm well aware i can have my own opinions, i still don't want to make anyone feel bad for me being a disliker ( maybe hater? ).
Spoilers / talking about the new Venom movie below. If you liked it I'm glad you did! If you want to explain in why in comments, feel free! /genuine
I'll start with: i had a bad-ish day so maybe everything soured my mood and i wasn't ready i. The end. I also picked the wrong ticket and had to watch it in 3D < not a 3D fan due to being sensitive to flashing lights.
What i did like:
Implications of being bonded since v1
Knull ( surprisingly, i hate the comic story though I'm gonna be so real. But its been awhile since i looked up the plot/story ).
Agony and the Christmas themed Symbiote
Horse.
Dancing.
The blue symboite and that fire symbiote ( so pretty?? I loved the different powers and such. I want to draw both of them ).
The symbiote hunter, shes gorgeous.
What i Did NOT like:
Toxin being erased entirely.
They killed of Carnage and Cletus in 2 so this whole thing flopped without them IMO
You can see where Disney or Sony whoever wanted this or that but when Tom or whoever didn't want it, it got scrapped and had messy left overs.
Too much action and too much comedy ( the dancing was fine, but the hippie family deal went on a bit too long imo ).
Why was Agony introduced but not the other three? Specifically Scream at least?
Knull having his own thanos moment for sony, a spin off or whatever they're doing.
Eddie's ENTIRE attitude.
That Montage was ASS. Hate that song too.
Too much going on imo
I would have loved to have a genuine queer moment, a kiss, a "i love you", literally anything. I can MAYBE understand if they tried but Sony or Disney said no ( fuck them ) but still. And no i was one of the few that hope there wasn't fucking or kiss with HARD tongue ( i am ace and also these two are my dads to me, it would've been awkward ). Yeah i see some people saying "Its textual" !!!
Yea sure thats nice but aren't you tired? It doesn't have to be queer baiting but like. I'm so tired.
Even if you remove that um? Its not.. that great.
I'm WILLING to watch it again and read positive sides. Because my mood just may have soured.
i think my biggest issue if i take everything away what i just said, is Eddie just going back to being annoyed at every little thing Venom does or wants. ITS OKAY to be concerned about being found by the hunter, but even before then hes just so done. And even during? He should've been concerned. Or Yeah he CAN be annoyed / irritated, but it should be with care. This felt like he was back to thinking of Venom as a tumor, something he just needs to get rid of.
It was vastly upsetting as someone who has partners. Like.. it would be okay if this was the second or first- but it isn't!!!!! And yeah couples fight, but they didn't even do that. Couples have disagreements! But they didn't even talk it out or anything.
Also like? One of my things that bugged me was, when Eddie was complaining about his feet, and we knew Venom couldn't fully take over..... why didn't Venom just yk. Cover his feet for him and walk? That would have been a subtle sweet gesture while they could've still been bantering and so on.
If they had like. Argued, fought, had an emotional moment at the end, Eddie was upset he never got to apologize- i could see it. But thats another thing- he wasn't even THAT upset...
Its fine to not be a super empathetic person, fuck i dont always cry appropriately either. But he didn't show Nothing and not in a "i'm a no empathy person" way.
Idk!!!!!!!! My brain is scrambled.
People have said a lot of what i have problems with already but idk i just!!! Feel the need to put it out there.
Also i missed the second end credit scene :,)
Note: I'm not angry or completely a hater. More so neutral and not a huge fan of some things.

recently discovered i dont dislike movies or tv shows, i just dont like action or romance and prefer horror! can i have some horror recs for someone who's only watched silence of the lambs?
Absolutely!! I tend to prefer horror/suspense too. One thing I think is important to know trying to get into the horror genre is that there are SO many subgenres of it. Personally, I prefer more artsy psychological horror, but that's not necessarily going to be your preference. You might prefer slashers, gothic, supernatural, comedic, etc., but I think there's a subgenre for everyone!
My personal favorite horror TV series are:
NBC Hannibal
Basically has everything I love; it's psychological, gory asf but relies more on tension than jumpscares, and it touches on topics like mental illness and queerness. (The main storyline centers on 2 men who are canonically and explicitly in love with each other.) All around awesome. Since you watched the SotL movie and liked it, you might have fun watching a show with some of the same characters in a more modern setting.
Yellowjackets
Yellowjackets is a blend of psychological/supernatural elements in a thriller series. It's overtly queer horror and also centers around female storylines. The characters are incredibly compelling and the actresses for both the teen timeline and adult timeline are all AMAZING. It recently had its 3rd season release and is already set for a 4th season, so if you're looking for an ongoing series, this is perfect. Should note I LOVE my cannibal shows so both YJ and Hannibal are. You know. Cannibal shows!! Although I'm sure that's probably obvious for Hannibal.
Stranger Things
Yeah, I know, incredibly mainstream recommendation. But it's good! Really good if you're a sci-fi fan in addition to horror. It was my baby's first introduction to the horror genre and I think it works perfectly for that purpose. Season 5 is coming out in November, and all 4 seasons up to this point have been excellent.
IWTV
The obligatory gothic horror recommendation. Also an ongoing series! More queer horror for the soul. Like seriously, everyone is queer. You have evil gays everywhere. A few less evil gays. There's a healthy blend of humor in there too and I don't find it to be particularly irking in terms of violence/gore if you want something easier to stomach.
Some of my favorite horror movies are the Saw movies (gore, gore, gore, big red flag that says gore, it's been labeled as torture porn so be careful on this one if that's not your thing) especially the original and about the next 4 movies (personally I'm not invested in the characters past this point); Jennifer's Body, which is, again, overt queer horror, and a lot of supernatural horror centered around demons; Ginger Snaps, more supernatural horror + awesome female leads, one of the main characters being played by Katharine Isabelle, who plays Margot Verger in Hannibal; and the Fear Street movies, a slasher trilogy with queer main characters + Sadie Sink from Stranger Things.
For all-time horror classics, you can literally never go wrong with Stephen King adaptations. The Shining was my first horror movie and remains one of my favorites. Since you watched SotL, you might like the Red Dragon movie with Anthony Hopkins returning as Hannibal Lecter. It's not as good as SotL, but it's a fun watch! Manhunter is my personal favorite film adaptation of the Red Dragon book, which doesn't have any actors from other Hannibal movies, but it shines on its own. The Blair Witch Project is AMAZING and has an insane (like truly insane probably unethical) backstory for the filming process. Alien is a space horror lover's fever dream (me). And I'll admit I really like Jaws. It's pretty stupid but... why the hell not. It's charming.
And for recent releases, the best of this year have been Sinners and Bring Her Back. Sinners is the best original horror movie I've seen, and Bring Her Back... fucking traumatized me but that means it must be good 😭 Beware of the intense gore/body horror! That also reminds me to recommend The Substance for recents, but again, watch the body horror. I thought it wouldn't be too hard to handle but. It does its job.
Hope this gives you some options to get started with!! Thanks for the ask, I love yapping about horror media <33

hey cas hope youre having a good holiday season
im kind of struggling with how my life is going and i just need to tell someone and you genuinely are like a big sibling to me
so to start im 17 and homeschooled in a conservative christian household im also genderfluid and either pan or omni im not sure on that part yet
i have two brothers and both parents. my parents have made it very clear that if youre trans your faking it and if you are gay its a choice.
i found out that my older brother is both homophobic and racist while discusing the live action how to train your dragon movie he said and i quote " i just dont see why they have to insert their lgbtois agenda" the subject of queer people was never mentoned so i asked him what that had to do with the actresses skin color and he responded with "the b in lgbtq stands for black" i said no it stands for bisexual and he responded with "how do you know?" i said it was common knowledge and he still went on about character designs and how a character looks reflects who they are
i really want to tell my family that im part of the community they think is so wrong but i dont know what will happen
conversion therapy has been my bigest fear ever since i figured out who i was its illegal in my state but its not in the state next to mine and that state is within driving distance and i know that if my parents really thing it will be best for me they wont hesitate to send me
my dad said he wants me to always be honest with him about what i believe even if he doesnt agree but i really dont know if thats true and i feel stuck because im surrounded by christians who all preach no judgement but then i watch as they ruthlessly judge others without knowing anything about that person
sorry if this was too long but i needed to tell somebody before i burst
-rex
Hi!
I'm so sorry your family is like this. It's an awful thing to deal with <3
I think if there's any fear for your safety (I.e. conversion camp) you should wait to tell them until you're of legal age. I know it's absolutely horrible to think about hiding a huge part of you, but when your safety is an issue, it's much better to wait. Instead, could you find a support system outside of them? Maybe some supportive friends or adults at school?
I know it's hard to deal with bigoted family, but focus on your safety until you're 18. Then you can start to try to express yourself more <3
My wife has named you eggshell anon

Writing Challange
For?: Anyone, but really I think it would be a pretty interesting study to have “anti-shippers” of the couples in question, to write these scenes.
Prompt: Re-write cannon scenes of popular “completely straight” gay ships that “fans created” and writers/showrunners/actors never encouraged or used as “queerbate”, as heterosexual relationships using the exact same actions and words and emotions as the original scenes.
Why?: I think it would be interesting to see just how many people would still see that particular couple the same way and how many would discover they actually do just have an aversion to gay ships.
I think that alot of people see the word “queerbaiting” and dont fully understand it. They take it like “oh they’re angry coz they didnt get their way, and they just want to make everything gay” … that is so completely not what it is.
Its understandable in a sense that the term queerbaiting isnt fully understood by all because theres no such thing as “straight-baiting” in television and movies. Its the actual complete opposite … when its a male/female relationship, its called a “slow-burn”, inferring that it will eventually become something. Its called “taking advantage of the actors chemistry” and while it is talked about and hinted at as a “will they/ wont they” its never actually in question because the majority of the time, chemistry reads are done between these actors for the specific reason of knowing “will this sell?” But when it comes to queerships, once upon a time they happened by accident. Actors were brought in with a different storyline and then something showed up on screen that wasnt intended and through that they discovered that there was this entire massive subset of fans who were not being acknowledged in life or on television … so they did exactly what they did with their straight relationships. They took advantage. They teased and hinted and wrote things that had they been a “usual” couple, would eventually lead to “endgame”. They encouraged the will they wont they of it all. Took advantage of that chemistry. The only difference? They never intended to give their fanbase that eventual outcome. They straddled the line of keep them invested but never encourage. And now? Now it seems that its become a requirement for shows, to have that one relationship that is strictly-straight friends, “which is so much more special then romantic love sometimes”… but they will still play off of it and benefit from merchandise and views and hashtags and everything that brings in a dollar from fans who are only looking for exactly what they’re calling it … “every kind of love” …. Why cant two women have a healthy faithful relationship? Why cant two men who are best friends, ALSO fall in love with each other? Why cant a character who has only ever identified as “straight” grow and realize that they’re bi or pan or gay? And why cant two people be both best friends and queer but also find love with other people? Why cant a queer man and a straight man have a healthy loving friendship that doesn’t have to end horribly? A big part of it is because of those words! Words that for so long have been used as homophobic slurs and still today in Twenty-freaking-twenty-four are used with hate instead of what they actually ARE which is how people identify how they LOVE . Words that the LGBTQIA+ community have taken back and fight every day to redefine with love and Pride and positivity, but that the “ entertainment industry” still shy away from due to a history of hate-filled, un-informed homophobia. An instilled fear that if they step over that line, then it will all fall apart. That the villagers will come with their torches and pitchforks and storm the castle so to speak. So they stay just this side of “not too far” and spout the company line. “I think its really important that we show every kind of love” but never actually doing that. Because the other company line is “who else can we exploit for a dollar?”. And its not new. The entertainment industry has always used queer people to their advantage. Once upon a time it was for the “hilarity” of a man or woman dressing in drag to get away with some scheme. Or it was about gay bashing and feeding into hate and fear by showcasing what a horrible insult it is to be called gay or how dangerous it is to be out. How sexy it is for two women to be together - but only to turn on the straight male lead. Now its become something along the lines of a joke again, but now the joke is “we know what we’re doing and we’re going to keep doing it because we’re profiting off of it, off of you.”
Queerbaiting isnt us seeing something unintentional or not there. Queerbaiting is this: if the same scene can be rewritten the same way but as female/male, and you can suddenly see it as romantic, its because the relationship is queer coded, to pull in specific fans.
Scripts are not just dialog on a page. While actors are sometimes given leeway, they are given a script telling them how to portray the words on the page. How to move, speak, emote. A director films this, re-sets films again multiple times until what is written comes across on camera the way it was meant to. This is all then edited even further to make things even more impactful and entertaining. It is then viewed and approved and only then shown to these “delusional fans.” This is all done knowing what reaction they will get from it. There are people who actually have the job of encouraging these ships. Of finding more ways to profit off of something that somebody else is in charge of disproving to fans by calling it unintentional. It is an industry, a business, nothing is unintentional. That is queerbaiting.
Challenge: Just change one thing. One characters gender, thats all.
Go ahead and give it a try. Im honestly curious as to the outcome.
Also add some ships that you think apply in the tags!!

What i think is sadder is that Hori seems to really want ppl to like that pairing, but he also wants to keep short cutting development to make it happen faster. But it's not working. Everyone is pissed at him to some extent, and the more he chooses to focus on that flop the more ppl want to leave. But oh well, he wants to, so he's just gonna have to deal with it. I just wish he didn't drag other ppl's work down with it.
its just... weird. Tbh I dont want to focus at all on the extra one shot thing, I already gave it opportunities but the possibility of actually just being AGAIN about the mid ship that most ppl dont really feel passionate about, just takes the fun away from it. I just dont care about them together as a couple, and it hurts bc this idea being pushed ambiguously so much just made me dislike their own interactions as friends; I thought their friendship was great, but at this point with the "you can read it as romantic!!!" thing it just ended up pissing me off and boring me.
If they learned about anything, the one shot should just be a silly harmless one.
I understand theres a possibility of him actually wanting to develop them in the beginning but being advised against it bc ppl would just care about the action and not slice of life stuff, but trying to do anything now just seems pretty pointless, specially with how many ppl reacted after seeing that "extra special content" in the last volume (literally selling it and just caring about the limited cards). Its extremely vanilla, nobody was actually tense or waiting for this confirmation genuinely (what I mean by this is, ppl weren't actually wondering when would they become canon, or how their stories need each other; their stories dont need to make them stay together not even as hero partners, so not many were actually invested in their relationship; most ppl I have seen waiting for this are the dudebros who wanted to use it against queer shippers, not actual fans of the ship who do care about their development), so why do we have to buy merch with the promise of "special exclusive content!" when so many are already let down by the idea of it focusing on them.
At least in JJK they gave a small summary of what the extra content was going to be about, if I remember correctly, so from my part I wish they could just fucking do that: tell us which characters are involved, and how much time they actually have in the one shot. That's it. But SJ wants the money, so they wont "risk it" by being clear about it -however, I believe this could actually affect the sales more than before; as you said there are ppl actually going away from BNHA bc of 431 and that pair, so not denying it could just be "432: and they got crepes" its just making ppl not really want to care about even knowing what will be.
The excitement from the bonus content is gone for so many fans, and the worse part for the company is they hurt the shippers, the ones who historically speaking have kept TV shows, movies, books, comics and fandoms stay strong with fresh content and buying merch with huge loyalty; many still are keeping up, excited and buying stuff, but they wont get the money of huge parts of the fandom that did actually spend it on them for almost a decade.
The choices for 431 are so weird, I always cant tell what im supposed to understand about it -yeah it could imply something bc of the blushing, sure, but that handshake? From the guy that thinks hands express as much as eyes? Making them not really talk in these years? Idk, I just dont understand. How can I see it as romantic when its a bunch of nothing, and when you have to see things from Ochako's perspective exclusively (bc we still "dont know his feelings" outside of finding her helpful and being grateful for being his hero)... but could they focus now on how much he "does love her"?
I cant do this anymore, it was getting annoying years ago but at least ppl did get things they loved -the villains, the heroes, their ships, their dynamics-; focusing on them once made many turn away from BNHA, focusing on them twice? I think many of us will just... go full on death of the author, or just leave it behind, sell the merch and delete/abandon their fan accounts.

My friend asked me to send you this ask before they follow you, because they want to be safe, and want A Post with the answer. What's your stance on proshipping/profiction/etc.
fuck. alright. i knew this day would come. here's my stance.
i choose not to align myself or identify with either pro- or antiship labels. i find the debate to be really tedious and blown out of proportion. i also don't want to be involved with any arguments, and i don't mind if you're pro or antiship. i follow people who identify with both, and people of both persuasions follow me.
however, i do believe in "live and let live", and in my mind that also extends to people who enjoy "distasteful"/"unethical" ships. fiction is fiction, and fiction (and shipping fictional characters) can be a healthy and safe way to explore themes, emotions, and interests that may be harmful irl. i read american psycho and loved it and that was the initial spark for this opinion - american psycho is fucked up. it's horrible. i would never enjoy a story like that if it was real. but it's not real, it's fiction, and it's well-written and fun to read and the feeling of powerlessness to stop this grotesque horror going on in the pages is something i really enjoy. that's what people get from fiction: a chance to explore something otherwise impossible.
i don't have a problem with rpf, as long as your enjoying of a ship does not actually harm the people involved, and you don't extend your shipping to assuming that your favorite celebrities are together irl or bashing their actual partners. that does cause harm, when you assume that your *fictional* ship of real people is actually *real*. i have both created and consumed rpf content, and i personally treat those ships the same as i would any other ship: the people involved are fictionalized characters, not the actual people themselves, and i don't purport that those rpf ships are real or possible.
important caveat: fiction can and does affect reality. the media we consume has a profound impact on the way we view the world. but it's not up to the internet to determine what's healthy or harmful for an individual person; that's up to the individual. if you or the people around you observe that you get really violent or aggressive after playing video games or watching violent movies, maybe you should take a step back and examine why that's happening. maybe take a break.******
therefore, i am in favor of letting people ship whatever they want. i do not engage with incest, underage, or noncon content, and you will not find it on my blog. i don't think it's generally appropriate to share that kind of content with people who are uncomfortable with it, and i think it's perfectly fair to block and not engage with anyone who doesn't share your views. i will sometimes block blogs that share that sort of content, not because i hate them as people, but because i dont vibe with it. but if you do enjoy that content, and you find that it doesn't impact your worldview or actions in a harmful way, then i absolutely won't stop you. ship and let ship.
okay there you go. i do not identify with either proship or antiship. i don't vibe with most proship content, but i do think it should be allowed to exist. fiction can have an impact on people, in both positive and negative ways, but it is by definition not itself real. it's up to individual people to determine what's appropriate for themselves, and i don't believe it's appropriate or necessary to police what others ship or enjoy. an attempt to wipe proship content from the internet is a rabbithole that can quickly lead to bad places (blocking of queer content, restriction of sexual content in general, and eventually restriction of educational materials for minors, for example. we're seeing this with the KOSA bill in the usa).
it's up to you to curate your experience. as our fujoshi foremothers would say: dead dove, do not eat. don't like, don't read.
*****THIS IS NOT AN ATTEMPT TO SPREAD THE MYTH THAT VIDEO GAMES CAUSE VIOLENCE OR ANYTHING RELATED TO THAT. studies have shown that in general, violent media does not directly spark violence. HOWEVER, on an individual basis, violent content HAS been observed to impact the actions of some people. just because it does not on average cause measurable difference, does not mean that it cannot affect some people's actions and perceptions. it is purely an individual phenomenon.
p.s. just to be clear: i do not reblog explicit sexual content. if you're antiship, you will probably not find much objectionable ship content on my blog anyway. i also don't really engage with rpf content at this point, and i don't think you'll find any here. regardless of your stance, my blog is a fairly neutral zone. just please don't police what others choose to engage with online.
#toasty talks#thanks for the ask. i was hoping i'd never have to address this but it's probably a good thing it's out there.#sorry this was so long lol. waughh#hopefully i don't lose a million followers. i feel like that one post#17 year old on the night before their birthday at 11:59: adults dni (wipes out half their followers)#*turns 18*: minors dni (the other half of their followers are gone. they are alone at last)#shipping

Queer Media, you should check out!!!
Hello everyone. As everyone knows, it is pride month! To celebrate pride, I made a post on queer media you should check out. I hope you guys like it
Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!

This manga has a live-action movie and an anime adaptation. I personally only saw the movie and the anime. There are some differences, but both are good regardless. The anime got me in a chokehold, and I've been fixated on this for a few days now.
If you don't know about Cherry Magic! It is a story about Kiyoshi Adachi, a virgin who suddenly gains the power to read people's minds by touching them when he turns thirty. Through this power, he was able to recognize the feelings of his colleague, Yuuichi Kurosawa. Will he be able to return his feelings back or not? Watch it to find out hehehe. There is also Adachi's friend, Tsuge, who is also in a similar situation and finds Tsuge and Minato really cute together.
Overall, this was really good, and I keep rewatching over and over again.
The Owl House

Unlike Cherry Magic, this show focuses more on the lore than the romance in the show but it is good to point out that there are a lot of LGBTQ+ characters on The Owl House. The main character is canonically bisexual and there are other characters that are lesbian, pansexual, non-binary and etc. It is a phenomenal show and you should give it a watch!
If you have never heard of The Owl House, it is a show that focuses on Luz, a 14-year-old human discovering a whole new magical realm called the Boiling Isles and wishing to become a wizard. It is a show filled with beautiful storytelling and amazing world-building. Overall, it was an amazing show, and I can not explain how much this show means to me and how incredible this is.
Yuri on Ice!!!

This anime is not a BL but we can't deny that Yuri and Viktor are inlove with each other. (quick spoiler ahead!) THEY LITERALLY KISSED (Spoiler ends here DUXGUXGDH)
If you dont know about Yuri on Ice!!!, it is a series about Yuri Katsuki, a pro figure skater who was about to retire but meets Viktor and Yurio, who brings his back his love to compete in figure skating. I love this series. It gave me all the feels. It's such a good series, and you should check it out!
Heartstopper

Here is another piece of media that isn't animated. It is a live action series on Netflix based on the Webtoon with the same name. It follows Charlie and Nick and centers around their school life and young love.
I love Heartstopper soo much and it has a special place in my heart. I'm not the biggest fan of live action series or movies but this is one of the few exceptions. It is filled with wholesome moments and moments where you want to scream or want to cry. Overall, it is a good series to binge on and you should definitely give it a try.
Well, that's all for today, folks! I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed making this. Happy pride, everyone!
#anime#cartoon#the owl house#cherry magic#yuri on ice#heartstopper#live action#owl house#cherry magic! thirty years of virginity can make you a wizard?!#cherry magic is the sole reason i made this post fodjsjfnskssksk#i love all of these soooo much

Merlin BBC UK TV Show - Opinion Piece Part 09 - The Little Mermaid v/s Merlin
Thank you all for to the wonderful response I received on my post here :
The same friend and I ended up discussing the show in even greater detail.
Whilst my friend was more receptive to the "progressive sub-text" within the show his major issue was what he called a fairy tale treatment of a gritty story.
I retorted that fairy tales have universal appeal and often contain in them morals and lessons which lend to a more complex narrative upon further inspection.
As our talks went on, I could not help but find narrative overlaps between the 2008 Merlin TV Series and Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid fairy tale published during 1830's.
So I felt that it could become a Tumblr post.

PLEASE DONT CONFUSE THIS WITH THE DISNEY ANIMATED AND LIVE ACTION FILMS !!!!
Here is my attempt to outline the similarities between our protagonists and the themes.
Raised by single parents
Merlin was raised by Hunith whereas the Mermaid was raised by
the Sea King.
They both feel alienated
The Mermaid feels alone while living in the ocean forever trying to
connect with the world around her.
Merlin also feels like he didn’t belong in the village he lived in.
They both leave their childhood homes
Merlin leaves Ealdor and goes to Camelot whereas the Mermaid
leaves the underwater sea and goes to the Prince's kingdom
They end up saving the life of their soul-mate upon their initial interaction
Merlin saves Arthur's life in Season 1 Episode 1 whereas the
Mermaid saves the Prince from drowning when his ship catches
fire.
They have longer life span than their soul-mate
Merlin is an immortal whereas Arthur's death has been foretold.
The Mermaid is told by her grandmother that she could live for
300 years whereas humans live for a shorter time.
Their soul-mate is unaware of their true identity
Arthur is unaware of Merlin's magic till the very last episode
similarly the Prince is unaware of the Mermaid's identity.
They give up their identity for their soul-mate
Merlin despite being a powerful sorcerer becomes Arthur's servant
whereas the Mermaid gives up being a princess and becomes
human.
They prioritize their soul-mate ahead of themselves
Merlin convinces Arthur not to legalize magic as he thinks this
will save Arthur's life, even though his own circumstances would
change for the better.
The Mermaid does not kill the prince even though it would save her
own life in the end.
The story ends in death.
Arthur dies in Merlin's arms.
The Mermaid dies heartbroken with her body turning to foam.
Queer themes
I have already outlined magic being a methaphor in my post here:
The Little Mermaid's queer themes can be read in the article here:
Silence as a theme of repression
The Mermaid is literally silenced by the Sea Witch in order to fit into heterosexual human society.
Merlin chooses to remain silent despite seeing the injustice and persecution of queer magical creatures around him. If Merlin had expressed himself he would be arrested or even put to death.
Sea Witch and Morgana
The Sea Witch is an antagonist in the The Little Mermaid and Morgana is the chief antagonist in the Merlin series.
In popular mythology there was a Sea Witch named Morgana who was a main contributor in luring sailors to their deaths.
I thought this was a remarkable coincidence when researching this topic

🏳️🌈🧡💀 for the last one you must choose someone who has not canonically died... narrowing it down but not by much heheh
🏳️🌈: Which character who is commonly headcanoned as queer doesn't seem queer to you?
ouhggg i dont know if i can come up with another one besides havoc. i dont see that many popular queer headcanons outside the main cast and the mustang adjacents..... hits a random character with the cishet beam i guess. den the dog is now HETEROSEXUAL
🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?
nothing HUGE is coming to mind instantly, but one time i saw someone interpreting the final scene in the manga with hohenheim and trisha as their "ghosts" actually being in resembool and watching over it. which theres no direct evidence AGAINST in the scene but personally i feel like that would be in severe contradiction with the whole message of "the dead can never return to the living, they arent here anymore, you have to accept it and move on". my interpretation has always been that their afterlife beyond the gate took the form of the home they shared, because what they wanted most out of everything in the universe was to just be there together. if ghosts were real in fma world thatd kind of make everything feel pointless
(which, apparently they did in the live action movies with winrys parents. Lol)
💀: If you had to choose one major character to die, who would you choose?
mustang for tje third time

laughing crying throwing up over your live blogging of American psycho holy shit 😭 I have to call Patrick Patty from now on that's. Classic. Also yeah that movie is truly unhinged. The prevailing theory is that it's about how rich white men are often isolated but have the privilege of low acting so they can (and do) get away with murder but also the flipside of that is that these men do not get the help they may need if they're suffering from mental or physical illness like Patrick (because he is clearly severely mentally ill and a repressed fag lol). He isn't a good person, that's not the point of the movie but he does need help and he's unable to get it both because he doesn't know how to ask for help and is repressing his feelings, and because of the cultural taboo around him asking for help. He's doing what is expected of him: dating/fucking women, going to nice restaurants with his buddies, showing a surface level understanding of politics. But under that is a deeply fucked up guy who is probably into men but is unable to explore those feelings. Idk. There are better worded analyses out there but I'm just glad you enjoyed it!
this is a good analysis!! yeah i can definitely see a queer reading honestly. i think you could definitely say that the hypersexuality of him constantly having sex with woman and seemingly getting nothing out of it is a form of overcompensation, or like, trying to prove to himself that he is straight.
all his political views that he mentioned, seemed to just be buzz words. like i hate the idea of "virtue signalling" but, my understanding of the phrase makes it seem that thats what he was doing, just trying to make it seem like he had all the right political beliefs, when really it was shallow. that was interesting.
also, due to the nature of it being . id say first person. obviously we dont see directly through pats eyes but we do hear all of his thoughts and only see his actions (which i think is what makes something first person in a film perspective? unless thats just third person with a limited narrator? idk all the film terminology). anyway due to us only seeing pattys side of everything. we get this idea that all the men around him are fulfilled. they appear to be doing all the same daily work activities as him, but unlike him, they seem to be enjoying it, further isolating bateman. you could probably take a marxist reading of this, study batemans actions through like, the theory of alienation maybe?
i unfortunately dont know too much about the marx's theory of alienation, but it did seem as if patrick was very isolated and had no real substance in his life, leading to a degradation of the self and then a loss of empathy? leading him to kill to just, find some semblance of humanity? unless it states earlier in the movie that he's lacked emotions since he was a child. anyway maybe a marxist reading but definitely an anti-capitalist reading this movie is chockers full of anti-capitalist messages. dorsia as an unachievable goal, the godot theyre waiting for or the green light theyre chasing could be like, personal fulfillment in a capitalistic society, like how theyre always pressing for the next level, trying to gain more money for really no reason? idk . idk why i mentioned godot that probably doesnt have many textual links other than the one i mentioned and even that is weak, but theres probably some good links to be made between this and gatsby? not sure, i didnt pay too much attention to it .
anyway. this analysis is like. really weak. its late and my brain is off LOL im sorry its so messy. this is a great exam piece though

(So. I'm going to preface this by saying I'm a Gen Z queer kid who doesn't know what it was like to be LGBTQ in the earlier days of our fight for equality, and I don't know what it was like to have the ONLY queer representation onscreen be queer-coded villains. This post is not to be taken too seriously. It was just a silly thought that popped into my head, so I wanted to share a lighthearted rant about it. Please don't murder me okay thanks)
Sometimes life gives you lemons, and sometimes it hits you with the Disney Villains hyperfixation. Again.
This post isn't going to be about how much I am a fUCKING SIMP because I do NOT have the balls to talk about the shit that runs through my head when I'm just casually in love with fictional Bad People™️
Instead, it's just about me diving through various rabbit holes and learning about the queer community's complicated relationship with Disney Villains. I learned what the Hays Code was, and how it was the origin of the queer-coded villain trope. Good guys weren't allowed to be gay. And even though the Hays Code eventually just kinda died for the most part, the trope stuck around.
But even though the trope was designed to frame queer people as untrustworthy, perverse, and strange, a lot of LGBTQ folks really, REALLY love these diabolical characters, myself included-- although I wasn't around when the queer community first "claimed" the villains as our own, so to speak. I actually watched a really interesting video essay on the subject that I'll link to below! A lot of it boiled down to a sense of relatability to these characters-- these villains want to take charge of their lives, and are more often than not outcasts in some respects. So, really, it becomes easy to see the appeal of these extremely self-confident and unapologetically different characters.
But again. Queer-coded villains come with a lot of historical baggage. Thus, when the live-action remakes started coming out, the villains lost most of the queer-coding they had.
But that gave them the new problem. They are FUCKING BORING. LOOK I HAD TO SAY IT. These bitches do NOT have much personality to them. I'd give an example of a Disney live-action remake villain to prove this point, but uh I'm. Kinda boycotting Disney right now, and these movies. I cannot remember these movies enough to tell you anything about them.
BUT ANYWAY. I realized that kind of leaves queer audiences between a rock and a hard place: either have a queer-coded villain whose trope was literally made to villainize queer people, orrrr have a villain whose personality is so bland that you might as well replace them with a sapient cup of tap water and still have the same impact.
And thus, I propose a solution to this dilemma!
Yes, queer-code the villains (DONT LEAVE YET IM GETTING SOMEWHERE). Make them just as delightfully overdramatic as villains like Maleficent or Jafar. Give them that limp wrist. GIVE THOSE MALE VILLAINS PERFECT EYELINER.
But if you're going to queer-code the villain? Then queer-code the hero, too. Show that queerness is not intrinsically tied to morality of any kind, it's just a part of who some people are. Make those heroes flamboyant. Give them that drag queen gait. If you're feeling froggy, lesbian-code the hero's mom or something! Make her be older and unmarried and give her that deeper voice and then show how fucking awesome of a mother she is to the hero. Walt Disney would be rolling in his grave (or cryogenic pod depending on who you ask /j), and I think that would be truly beautiful.
So. Yeah. That about covers it. Okay everyone go home and drink water. :)
EDIT: HAHAHAHA I DEFINITELY DIDNT FORGET ABOUT THE LINK TO THE VIDEO OR ANYTHING
